August's Graduation

In a world where you can be anything you

want, BE YOURSELF - Anonymous

 - My Precept

The book Wonder was Amazing to read. August, or Auggie, truly inspired me.

Auggie is graduating from the fifth grade, and his first year of school has been a very eventful one. He has made friends, made enemies, gained confidence, and learned. He has not only learned the subjects he learns in school, but he has learned about himself, and the cruelty of the real world.

I can't even count how many times I teared up during this book, and when I wasn't tearing up, it was definitely pulling on my heart strings. But I'm going to skip straight to the end of the story, Auggie's graduation, because that is the part of this book that touched me the most.

At graduation, Auggie isn't expecting any special honors, he is just happy to watch his friends get recognized for there achievement, and happy knowing that being there means that he has made it through his first year of public school.

August's Summer Precept
When Mr. Tushman starts taking about the Henry Ward Beecher Award, I knew it was going to go to Auggie, cause, well, that's how books go. So when the award was being explained, and Mr. Tushman started to get choked up, I got choked up right along with him because all of the things that were said about the person who would receive this award described Auggie perfectly. The whole book I hoped that people would finally see the real August Pullman. We never really see his face, but we get to go inside his head, and he is the most beautiful person on the inside.

After Auggie received the award, his friend, Jack Will, started a chant of his name, and Mrs. Garcia was crying, happy tears of course. This part was so powerful to me. Auggie, his whole life, thought that everyone saw him as a monster, and he never thought that he could really make a difference. Seeing all of the people in the end of the book that Auggie touched with his life is the greatest ending I think this book could have.

I would recommend anyone read this book. Adult, child, man, woman. It is a book that touches your heart and gives you a window into another world. "Normal" people think that every person who doesn't look or act exactly like them is a freak. Maybe this book will give people a new perspective. It's books like this that can change the world.
